Book Review: Markos illuminates the classics for readers
Back in the day when classical education was the norm, people grew up familiar with “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey.” These days, the only odyssey we’re familiar with is one we use to check our grades. Somewhere along the line, we decided that the Greek and Roman classics weren’t worthwhile and just a little too dense anyway. In “From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics” Louis Markos takes the stories of Homer, the Greek playwrights and Virgil, making them accessible and entertaining. More than that, Markos finds the truths in these pagan stories that Christians can identify as true truths. Don’t let the scholarly title scare you; this is light reading that dusts off some fantastic old stories for us non-scholars.
