Newhouse goes from business world to teaching
After holding many different jobs in the business and marketing worlds, Shawn Newhouse decided she wanted to change career paths. She thought she might want to teach at the university level.
Newhouse got her Bachelor of Science/Systems in Business Administration from Taylor University in 1990. She knew that Taylor had a good program so she headed back to there to get her MBA, which she received in 2006.
For the past two years, she taught a few classes at Cornerstone University and this fall started on as a full time professor.
Newhouse has worked in several different areas. She worked for non-profit organizations, worked in international business, was a business manager and a financial director. She also worked in the private psychology practice business that her and her husband created.
Newhouse said she liked working in all of the different areas. She had to be organized in all of them, and in many of her jobs, she ended up doing financial tasks. After a while, she decided to refocus her interests. That is when she went back to school.
She applied at Cornerstone when the school had an opening, but the position had been filled already. However, she was kept on file which worked to her advantage when a faculty member left unexpectedly and she was called in to teach some classes. In the business division, Newhouse currently teaches classes in international business and in marketing.
“It was a perfect fit for me,” she said.
Newhouse said when she set out to start working as a professor, she wanted to end up at a Christian school. From her time at Taylor, she knew Christian education was something she supported and wanted to be a part of.
After two years of being part time, another position opened up at CU and this summer Newhouse was brought in full -time.
The transition from working in the business world to teaching college students was interesting.
“It is very different going from the marketplace to academics,” she said. “But I enjoy the opportunity to be involved in student’s lives.”
Emily Faletti, a junior marketing major, has been taught by Newhouse in the classroom.
“Professor Newhouse has a lot of experience and really knows how to engage her students in the classroom. We do a lot of hands-on studies and projects,” Faletti said. “She’s a great prof and gets to know her students on a personal level.”
Outside of working, Newhouse loves spending time with her husband and three kids.
She enjoys playing soccer and plays in recreational leagues that she calls her “‘old lady leagues’ because you have to be over 30 to play.” She plays for fun in both indoor and outdoor recreational leagues.
Newhouse also really likes to travel. She has traveled to in Africa, China, the Far East, Europe, Bosnia and more. Right out of college she taught English as a secondary language in Hong Kong. She was even traveling when she got the first call to come and teach for Cornerstone. She came back from her trip to New Zealand to find the good news.
She and her husband are supportive of mission work and sometimes house missionaries. A lot of their travels are mission related.
She also likes to read and spend time with her family by playing games or having movie nights.
