Season brings team together
Two things are necessary to building a successful collegiate sports program.
One is to have the time to let it grow, almost like a child. Second, the program needs to find the right mixture of people and talent that will set a firm foundation for years to come. The CU women’s golf team has done both.
This year the women finished no higher than second. However, coming together as a team was more important this year than first place finishes.
“As far as scores go, we certainly tried our best but were not overly concerned with rank,” sophomore Stefanie Stuewe said.
“We are a very new program and before we can be truly competitive we need to form a strong team and make sure we find our balance.”
This season was only the second for the women’s golf program, so gathering learning experiences was very important for the program and for the team to grow.
“Throughout the season we not only improved our golf scores but came together and bonded as a team,” junior Chelsea Glerum said.
“This season was a very positive learning experience for all of us,” Glerum said.
Because it is such a new program, having underclassmen fill out the roster is almost a certainty. However, that usually means success is on the horizon.
“We have three freshmen this year so much of the season was spent getting them acclimated and forming relationships with one another,” Stuewe said. “Next year looks promising as well; we are looking at a couple recruits and hope to continue moving forward as a program.”
“I think in the coming years our program is going to continue to get stronger,” Glerum said. “This will help us compete with our conference which is getting stronger as well.”
