Editor’s Notebook: Hope in the midst of change
You’ve been hearing about it for months, and now the time has come for America to watch it unfold.
I don’t care what political paradigm you associate yourself with. You cannot deny that the result of the Nov. 4 election will be exactly what the president-elect promised throughout his campaign.
Change.
I firmly believe that change needs to happen in America. But what does that change look like? Is change even possible?
Oh, it’s possible.
Not only is it possible, it’s happening regardless of who was elected as president. Just take a look at our society’s spirituality.
“We have definitely moved from being a Christian society to a post-Christian society,” CU president Joe Stowell said. “Increasingly, our society has become more hostile to the things we believe in.”
On top of all this, our country is in the midst of one of the greatest economic crises of our nation’s history. Unemployment is skyrocketing, stock prices are plummeting and the national debt is off the charts. We cannot even begin to imagine the impact this will have on our country. In order for our economy to stabilize, major changes will have to occur.
So how, as Christians, do we cope with all this change and uncertainty?
We need to remember that God is ultimately in control of our society and we need to cling to that belief with everything we have.
Dwayne Adams, associate professor of Bible, says that we should take comfort in the words of Isaiah 6:1-3.
“God is on the throne, no matter who is president and who is king,” Adams said. “He has never had to run and has never been voted out of office.”
Also, remember that God is at work in our society even when we can’t figure out what He’s doing. In Habakkuk 1:5, God says, “Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”
So do not fear change. Change occurs only because God allows it. However, do not blindly accept it. As our nation changes, show discretion in how much you are willing to allow yourself to change with it. Perhaps the change coming will allow Christians to make a stronger stand and be lights amid darkness.
But above all, take comfort in the fact that you know who’s ultimately in control.
