Film Review: “The Women” shows refreshing change
This film tells the tale of Mary Haines (Meg Ryan). Haines lives a seemingly perfect life, with a wealthy husband, beautiful daughter and a foot in the door of her father’s clothing company. Haines’ best friend Sylvie Fowler (Annette Bening) lives an equally exclusive life as a happily-single editor of a prominent fashion magazine. However, [...]

Muir reflects on journey to Cornerstone
Pete Muir just entered his teen years.
Although he is now in his 13th year teaching, Muir never originally planned to go into it as a profession.
“Even when I started teaching, it was to fill in time on almost part-time basis while I wanted to pursue music,” Muir said. “I got some regular cash while at [...]
A lifelong love of teaching and writing
Not every professor can claim 40 years of experience in his profession. Yet anyone who takes a class with David Egner knows that experience is one of his most interesting attributes as a teacher.
“I have a lot of experience in the practical realities of publishing. So, where others can be more idealistic about teaching you [...]
Treats in the Hall brings families to CU
As the remnants of Treats in the hall lay around, a constructed lamp post in the corner of the Corum, painted stars don the window in Pickitt’s hallway, while heroic figures still line the walls of VO, the fun and hard work of that one night is gone.
One day every year the resident and [...]
IJM has new adviser, renewed commitment
Several weeks ago Gerald Longjohn, director of ministry development, sat up in Spiritual Formation unable to use his office. Last year, several students sat in the cafeteria, locked in a metal cage.
Both of these situations were part of International Justice Mission trying to raise awareness among students about issues taking place around the globe.
Longjohn, faculty [...]

Our View: Please don’t panic; it’s just a virus!
By now most Herald readers have probably heard about the norovirus that infected more than 400 Hope College students and staff this past week.
Its symptoms include a sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, often accompanied by a low-grade fever, muscle aches and fatigue.
Although tests so far have not determined the cause, its [...]
Letter to the editor: 11/4/2008 Election Day
by Jenna Whalley
Waiting in a surprisingly long line Tuesday morning, I found myself contemplating the choice which lay before me. It was simple really, two polarized options, both and neither of which represented my values; by virtue of narrow constraints, a choice of non-choice. I stood, gazing anxiously toward the open church doors, basking in [...]
Our View: Santa gave the gift of summer
Say goodbye to Santa Clause, and hello to more sunny days.
Cornerstone University has decided to add two weeks to summer break – classes will begin after Labor Day next school year – and cut Christmas break by one week. Classes will also be slightly longer to make up for the one week difference.

Student Testimony: Danika Sweazey
The future terrifies me. I’ve been wrestling with my choice of a major like it’s my job for the past year or so. I think about graduation closing in on me and I want to run into my closet and hibernate until some wise Solomon makes the right decision for me.
There are so many [...]
Letters to the editor
To The Herald Staff:
I want to just commend all of you on doing a great job of writing on the 10-year anniversary of the ‘99 Championship team. Every article was well-written and brought back tremendous memories of that season for me. Your interviews with me and the actual writing were done very professionally.
The whole [...]
Has the rock lost its purpose?
I woke up Tuesday morning to the sun shining brightly on a beautiful day. As I was about to walk out my door to chapel, I heard another student make a reference to the election, and I remembered that today was Election Day, 2008. I had already sent in my absentee ballot weeks before, so [...]
Editor’s Notebook: Music is more than sound
I’m not particularly musical. Don’t get me wrong, I can carry a tune and all. I wouldn’t completely embarrass myself if someone was hiding in the back seat of my car and heard me singing along with the radio. But I’ll never find myself singing a duet with Carrie Underwood in front of thousands of [...]
Bringing sisterly love to the court
Freshmen basketball players Melissa and Robyn Veltkamp have a rare and priceless connection, as if they were two mobile units of one difficult-to-stop machine. The Hudsonville duo, contrary to popular belief is not identical twins, but they think and look identical while out on the courts.
Most of their time playing basketball was during their [...]

Sophomore ready to lead as CU pointguard, captain
Every team has a floor general. Someone to dictate the flow of the game, someone to make that extra pass or take that buzzer beating shot. For the Cornerstone Golden Eagles, that man is Dominic Allen.
Last year Allen, the six-foot sophomore point guard, contributed twenty-two minutes per game and led the team in assists. This [...]

Any student who regularly visits Cornerstone University’s library is familiar with the faces they see behind the counter. They are the people who check out your books. They are the people who help you with research. But the real question is: who are these people?
The head librarian, Fred Sweet, is married with three sons [...]

Get Out!: Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines fill restaurant
While looking for an international dining experience with my friend Katrina Scheer we were surprised at how “Americanized” the Asian Cuisine restaurant appeared.
Katrina and I parallel parked on Monroe Center downtown and headed to XO Asian Cuisine. When you first walk into XO you are greeted by two sets of wooden double doors, finally arriving [...]
