You can’t judge a book by its cover, and you can’t judge a restaurant by its building. The Wealthy St. Station is a mechanic’s shop turned deli.

When you walk into the Wealthy St. Station you may feel like it’s a mechanic’s shop. You order from the counter, and the menu is either on a poster board on the left, or in paper form on the counter for you to take home.

A very friendly waiter/server/cashier takes your order and lets you know when your food is ready. There are only about three tables for customers to sit at inside, so it seems that more people order their food by phone and pick it up.

Sophomore Abby Stoner and I decided to eat outside at one of the four patio furniture tables. It was fairly windy, but the sun was shining and the air was warm. When our food was ready, the friendly man at the counter who took our order let us know that our food was ready by banging on the garage door, and we went inside to get our food.

We sat and rocked out to 97 LAV-FM which just happens to be West Michigan’s “home” for classic rock — the typical music you hear when you go to have your car fixed, oil changed or tires repaired. We truly felt like mechanics taking a lunch break outside the shop, enjoying a hefty meal. There was also a mural painted on a wall next to the diner which provided something to look at while we ate.

I ordered the veggie sandwich with fries, which was hot and delicious. Abby ordered the chicken sandwich with fries. Our food came in fry baskets, and they gave us a bottle of ketchup to share. The fries had some sort of seasoning and were nice and thick, not crunchy or mushy, but just right. We also ordered drinks. The Wealthy St. Station offers a beverage choice in an abnormal fashion. Instead of the typical fountain pop, you order a drink by the can. They have Coke and Pepsi products. I ordered the delicious Black Cherry Cream Soda and Abby got a can of Coca-Cola. When you have finished eating, you take your basket, can, and ketchup bottle back to the counter and they take care of the rest.

From the counter, where you order your food, you can see everything. They have large glass coolers with the beverages, and you can watch the chefs grill and prepare your food. The menu of the Wealthy St. Station is very diverse. They have a mix of starters and sides, dinner baskets, an American menu, Polish menu, Mexican menu, and a kids menu. They also have substitutes for vegetarians on almost all of their sandwiches. This diner has a soup of the day, ice cream and two slushy machines.

People who love restoring old cars will especially love the Wealthy St. Station. Signs and pictures of vintage cars and auto-mechanic product brands covered the walls, creating a true mechanic’s atmosphere.

It takes about seven minutes to get to the Wealthy St. Station from Cornerstone and it is located on the corner of Wealthy and Fuller. They are open Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner. They are closed on Sunday. This diner may not look so appealing on the outside, but the food inside is delicious! The Wealthy St. Station creates the auto-mechanic atmosphere, so Get Out!, put on your collared shirt with your name stitched in the corner, and feel like a mechanic when you try their delectable food.

One word fits this non-traditional coffee shop: simple. Melissa Kersjes and I headed straight through the heart of Grand Rapids, and found ourselves at the corner of Monroe Center and Ottawa.

This coffee shop called Madcap has large windows with bench seating that overlooks the “big” tourist sections of Grand Rapids such as Van Andel Arena, the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Rosa Parks Circle.

This place doesn’t really cater to the typical coffee shop ollege crowd. You will only find real coffee.

They don’t have any artificial flavors like peppermint or strawberry syrup, only honey and cinnamon.

The menu is quite small as they have limited choices on espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, steamers and slow brewed coffee.

You do not typically see teens or even young adults drinking plain coffee, so Madcap is geared towards hardcore coffee drinkers/adults.

Madcap coffee would be the perfect place to have a business meeting or for two old friends to catch up.

You definitely wouldn’t want to walk in with your sweats and do homework for hours on end. Instead it’s the perfect place to bring your boss, and talk about professional things, in a professional setting.

However, the easy environment creates a place where you will not be distracted and where you could focus to get some work done.

The stone tables, contemporary seating, and acoustic guitar music provide a different feeling of relaxation than your typical coffee shop. It also was fairly bright at Madcap, and they even use CFL light bulbs, to help the environment.

Beautiful pictures of waterfalls from faraway lands hung on the wall, creating the desire to fly south for the winter, just like the birds.

This high class coffee shop does have the typical high ceilings, wood floors and a chalk board menu sign; it’s more sophisticated. It is very spacious which made it really quiet, and Melissa and I felt as though we had to whisper.

For Monroe Center, this building is definitely one of the classiest coffee shops, or even stores, on the block.

The employees helped us decide what we wanted to drink, and if they didn’t have what we wanted, they had alternatives.

So we ordered lattes with cinnamon and honey.

Madcap coffee truly knows how to make beautiful art out of a drink.

Melissa’s foam looked like a leaf, and mine resembled a heart.

We didn’t want to drink our coffee for fear of destroying the beautiful design. I personally do not like the taste of the foam on top, but the liquid was delicious.

Madcap coffee employees are Mac lovers, as even the cash register is hooked up to a Mac computer.

Bringing in your Dell computer might not be ideal. You also cannot expect to be able to go to Madcap in the evening.

They are only open until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, so going after a night class is not really an option, but it might encourage you to not wait to do homework until late at night, like most college students do.

However, on Friday and Saturday’s they are open till 11 p.m., so on the weekend you could go and get homework done.

Melissa and I left Madcap feeling trendy and sophisticated. This coffee shop could be for you, so Get Out!, take your boss out for coffee, and enjoy the ride downtown.

Global Infusion offers this relaxation through their 50 different choices of tea.

This little coffee and tea bar is bursting with color.

Trinkets and decorations cover the walls. We also saw beautiful paintings of some faraway destination which makes one want to be there instead of in this cold Michigan weather.

When you first walk into this small shop, you think it contains merely gifts and accessories that were imported from Africa. One word describes Global Infusion perfectly: eclectic.

After walking through and looking at all of the bags, tea kettles, plates and jewelry, we noticed that one of the walls was covered in book shelves that contained teas of all kinds.

Jars with white lids and little labels consumed our eyes as we read through the assortment of teas.

I couldn’t even begin to list all of the teas that Global Infusion has, it would take up this entire column.

We saw a man filling a bag with tea leaves and wondered how we went about getting something to drink.

After browsing through the store, we were greeted by a friendly employee, and we asked her to lead us to the most popular teas.

Global Infusion has teas of basically every flavor, as well as decaf teas.

Global Infusion supports Fair Trade, and they offer many such goods.

They have baskets, stone pieces, cookbooks and foods, jewelry and bags, hats and scarves, CDs, coffee, tea and chocolate, which they paid for at the fair trade price.

As we were browsing the store, we heard a woman ask for their shampoos and conditioners.

Who would have thought that this tea store would have organic shampoos and conditioners? Those must be good for your hair.

There were five tables in the front portion of the store so one can sit, have a good laugh with a friend, reflect on a hard day’s work, or simply enjoy a warm cup of tea.

My friend and I ordered the Jasmine green tea which tasted like gingerbread, and gave us an interesting little sting down our throats.

The next time I go, I want to try their Rainforest Chocolate Tea, which is a favorite among many customers.

Global Infusion is a tea & coffee bar, but in reality, it is so much more.

They have coffee, tea, lattes, chai, which is homemade and even baked goods from Marie Catribs, which is just down the road.

They also have a monthly drink feature. Global Infusion has an interesting policy called BYOB (bring your own bottle).

They do not have bottled water any more but will gladly fill your water bottle or give you a take-out cup of water for free.

They have a new reverse osmosis water filter, and judging by the name alone, it must be healthy.

They also give away moving boxes, which you can pick up at the back of their store for free. In the summer, they have patio seating on their nice wooden deck, in the front of the shop.

The drive to Global Infusion is not far; it only takes seven minutes from Cornerstone—just a little over four miles.

So grab a friend, and Get Out! to this nice coffee and tea bar that will make all your stress float away.

I was shocked that this hand painted sign hung from the ceiling, and honestly, I ended up smiling. I thought to myself, “We need more love in this world, particularly showing Jesus’s love, the perfect example.

On this particular Saturday, the place was packed, which gave me the impression that it must be delicious, but I did not let that persuade me. I wanted to taste the food for myself.

A good friend of mine came with me, and we discovered that the best way to enter Marie Catribs is through the back door, by where you park.

Our wait was about an hour, but it could be drastically reduced if we sat at the counter, so we agreed. We liked sitting at the counter because we got to watch the chefs prepare our food.

If you come during their busiest hours, do not fret. There is plenty to do within walking distance, while you wait for a table at Marie Catribs.

Right across the street is Global Infusion where you can get tea for two, and there are plenty of little clothing, accessory and gifts shops for browsing.

Our waiter was very personable and even gave us advice about what to eat. I ordered the Handyman sandwich, and my friend ordered the Russian [their most famous sandwich].

There was a wide bread selection and they were open to substitution if you did not like something on your sandwich.

The thick bread was matched by the ingredients inside, creating a healthy and delicious lunch. Yes, a rare occurrence; I just combined the words healthy and delicious. Marie Catribs needs the HD certification, (healthy and delicious) which I just made up, but it is so true.

The freshly baked goods did not weigh down our stomachs and left us feeling full, energized and healthy.

Our sandwiches also came with a cucumber pickle, which was a unique contrast compared to the typical dill pickle that is served with most deli sandwiches.

The atmosphere was casual and positive as the young, friendly servers joked with the customers.

I noticed that the ambiance was not typical, and the employees were a large contributor to this.

They did not wear the typical ugly, big uniforms. Instead they expressed their individual style which made me feel like a neighbor having a casual meal instead of a customer.

We even saw Marie herself. She smiled at us and chatted with numerous customers, making sure everyone was satisfied.

Here are a list of things you must check out when you go: the cucumber pickle, the sugar from Hawaii, the organic fresh food, the wonderful employees, the art and graffiti on the walls, the nice wood tables, and the other baked goods in the deli store!

My one suggestion when you eat at Marie Catribs and have to go to the bathroom is to lock the door behind you. The one stall bathroom doors make it seem like there is more than one stall. Unfortunately, I saw numerous people walk in on others before I used their facilities, so I made sure to lock the door behind me.

I also noticed that Marie Catribs is environmentally and neighborhood friendly. They have the half/full flush toilets that save water, numerous recycling bins, and they even sell some of their cookies and muffins at Global Infusion, just down the road.

The impression I got when I first walked into Marie Catribs was right on target. Many people love Marie’s deli, and even though it was packed, people were willing to wait. I have so many wonderful things I want to write about, but space is tight, so you definitely have to Get Out! for yourself! This restaurant gets my highest rating: a definite 5 out of 5.

The most intimate thing you can do with someone is to eat with them. Dr. White told this to my Diverse Population class about a month ago, and I have found it to be true.

Almost every morning after I wake up, I eat breakfast. I usually fill a bowl with cold milk and Honey Nut Cheerios, and eat with God. No, I do not get out a bowl and pour Him some Lucky Charms, but that would be sweet. Instead, I grab my Bible and devotional book. This year I am going through a yearly devotional called “Women of the Bible” by Ann Spangler and Jean Syswerda, which I would highly recommend to anyone.

One week my devotions were about an unfaithful woman who tried to seduce Joseph, Potiphar’s wife. I thought really nothing of this woman until I went to Ada Bible and Pastor Jeff Manion was talking about the life of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. Then in chapel the speaker mentioned the same thing. All in the same week, it seemed like God had a billboard laid right before my eyes, but instead of an outline of my life, it surprisingly read “drive,” and I knew it had something to do with my devotions. So I blinked my eyes a few more times, squinted to see if there was any fine print, and thought “What do ‘drive’ and Potiphar’s wife have in common?” When I asked that question one morning I suddenly felt like I had connected the dots and that God had whacked me in the forehead and said “DUH!” all at the same time. Well God was trying to tell me that like Potiphar’s wife, I was driven by merely protecting myself. I had become the passenger in my own life. I was driven by homework, making the Dean’s List, having friends, and working. Yeah, I was doing my devotions almost every morning, but was I really consciously there? Was I just going for the drive, looking out the window at all of the places I would go, but being driven by the old lady who goes way too slow, puts her blinker on way too early, and only drives during the day? Instead, I should have been driving hand-in-hand with a driver who gets my heart pumping and makes me almost reach for the “oh crap” handle. That crazy driver is God, and we never know where He is going, but He gets us there safely and right on time. He lets us get a little scared at times, and when He finally stops, He laughs and says, “If only you would trust me.” Then of course we laugh, become less tense and realize how ridiculous we were.

So God kept asking me when I was going to let Him get behind the wheel and help me put the “pedal to the metal.” Joseph was letting God drive his car, even though he was a slave, but God stopped with Joseph at so many wonderful places. Potiphar’s wife noticed that everything Joseph touched prospered, and she wanted to be part of that. I was Potiphar’s wife; I knew the life I could have. I needed to stop at a red light and yell “Chinese fire drill” with my homework, good grades, having friends and working, so that God and I could run around the car and jump in the driver’s seat before the light turned green. So we do not know what happens to Potiphar’s wife, we do not even know her name, but my name is Katlin Suzanne and like a bad prom date, I am usually really late picking up God, but He still likes me and is always there waiting patiently for me. So have an intimate breakfast with the One who is always patiently waiting for you to call on His name.

This small coffee shop provided me and Tessa a friendly, clean, relaxing, off-campus experience and the completion of some homework, unlike our dorm rooms.

Tessa and I headed to downtown Grand Rapids to one of my favorite streets: Ionia, a nice brick road which takes you right through the city.

This street provides many authentic restaurants, and Tessa and I decided to check out Go Java, a coffee shop.

When we entered the building that holds Go Java, we were surprisingly confused.

It was about 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night, and every other coffee shop downtown was closed.

Go Java stays open until 9 p.m. on the weekdays.

This coffee shop had the typical high ceilings, wooded floors, soft classical music playing in the background, the refreshing smell of freshly made coffee, assorted seating, free WiFi, and the list goes on.

However this coffee shop was about the size of a Pickett dorm room – bigger than the rooms in Cook and VO, but not by much.

When we walked, in we were surprised that they were still open because the place was bare.

There were only 17 seats in this small coffee shop, and every seat was available to us.

Four seats overlooked the street which gave us different scenery.

Two employees with the typical apron and hats stamped with the Go Java logo greeted us almost immediately.

They asked us what they could get for us and waited patiently as we browsed the small menu.

A lot of things that Go Java offers its customers are not on their menu.

They are in the cooler and glass shelves below the counter.

Go Java offers Jones Sodas, orange Juice, apple juice, Arizona drinks, kettle corn, sun chips, yogurt, salads, muffins, cookies and Coca-Cola (YUM!), which are not on the menu.

So basically it is a mini gas station … or not.

However, on the menu you will read that they also offer lattes and cappuccino, hot chocolate, iced tea drinks, iced chai tea, smoothies and mochaccinos.

They even had parfaits like one you would find at McDonald’s.

Go Java makes the promise that they have the “real” cappuccino, unlike the fake ones you find at any Starbucks or Biggby’s.

Right? Maybe. I am not a fan of foamy milk and neither is Tessa, so all true cappuccino lovers will have to find out if this cappuccino promise is valid.

Go Java is right next to Hopcat, a Grand Rapids authentic restaurant and bar, which happened to be very busy on Wednesday nights. Go Java has a Web site (www.gojavacoffee.com) which provides directions, their menu and a description of the experience you will have.

The employees at this small coffee shop chatted with us about the different drink options, their hours and the customers that come in.

They even swept, mopped and wiped down the counters and bathroom when we were there.

We noticed that it was very clean when we walked in, and we also found a free map of Grand Rapids.

Tessa and I were tempted to put down our homework when we saw the board game Sorry, and they have the perfect high round tables for playing.

We did our homework and headed back to Cornerstone, to finish off a fairly productive night.

So Get Out! and have a productive night at this dorm-sized coffee shop, perfect for studying.

Sparrows are small birds that are often found in urban settings and are commonly known as the song bird. In East Town you will find a cute little coffee shop that is just the same.

Formerly known as The Stray Dog, this one-of-a-kind coffee shop is also known for their tea and newsstand. The atmosphere is very low-key and calm which makes it a nice place to catch up with friends or do homework and study. The Sparrow is very conducive to studying because everyone who was there was on a computer. They have free WiFi, and the furniture is spacious, creating the best atmosphere.

The Sparrow has changed the definition of coffee shop. They are neighborhood-oriented, meaning they have evening events such as art openings, receptions and music. They also try to utilize Michigan and Grand Rapids-based products and vendors. The owners of this coffee shop try to keep business and money in the community. Hanging on the walls in The Sparrow is local art that continually changes. They also have locally made goods such as jewelry for sale. Sparrow’s focus is on organic and fair-trade. They have rice milk, soy milk and almond milk for those who may have allergies. You can also order caffeine free tea espressos, a pastry or crepe.

The Sparrow looks like it may have been converted from a brick house to a coffee shop, as well as the other businesses on the street. They have wood floors, high ceilings, and soft lighting, creating an old fashioned yet contemporary atmosphere. The circle and square tables provide plenty of space for people to sprawl out. The menu is displayed not on your typical chalk board, but in a wooden board hanging high for everyone to see. Almost every table had someone sitting at it, and it was still surprisingly quiet. Soft, smooth music rang in the background as my friends Rebecca Gonzalez, Katie Stapf and I played Scrabble. When we went, there were people of all ages, young and old. This coffee shop also caters to everyone because they have games such as Scrabble, and baby toys to keep the little ones entertained.

Katie, Rebecca and I had to choose whether we wanted tea or coffee. I chose to order a Hazelnut latte and the man who made my drink even artistically made a leaf out of the foam. Rebecca got the Irish Cream steamer and they made it really thick, and she thought it was delicious. Katie ordered the Chai Tea Latte with rice milk. The drinks came in these tall glass cups with cardboard sleeves.

At The Sparrow, the reading selection seems endless. Laid out on a nice shelving unit are over 100 different magazines to choose from, which can be purchased. Lined up on a long counter are jars of loose leaf teas, all displayed right before your very eyes. Katie, Rebecca and I counted about 35 total tea jars. The Sparrow also has a combination of drinks: espresso latte, cappuccino, caffeine free tea espressos, bubble teas and soups.

Our President Joe Stowell and his wife Martie have been spotted drinking coffee at The Sparrow, as well as Jeff Manion, teaching pastor at Ada Bible Church.

The Sparrow is a sweet little place with a good feeling about it. They have a wall covered with a selection of magazines and newspapers for reading, and lined their long counter with jars of loose leaf teas. When you order tea, it comes with a cool tea brewing canister that you take to your seat. You can also get free water refills, creating more than one cup of tea. So, Get Out and try something new, like The Sparrow coffee, tea and newsstand, which gets my highest rating.

She asked us if we had ever been to Brick Road Pizza before, and after we replied, “No” she said, “Well finally, you’re here,” and we laughed. She was very warm in spirit and always made sure to check on us. She helped us understand the menu and discussed with us how we did not like tofu. Our waters were refilled, and she even brought us our check because she knew we were running out of time to head to our concert. As well as taking care of their customers, we noticed the hint smell of cleaner, and we knew that the employees take care of this restaurant.

Mindy and I first ordered the Brick Road Sticks which ended up being a large appetizer for only $3.95. We devoured the soft twisted bread sticks and the marinara sauce that came with it. Our pizzas came just in time; we did not wait longer than ten minutes. Mindy and I wanted to experience all that Brick Road Pizza has to offer. We ordered the 7-inch Hula Dance, Mindy’s favorite choice of pizza, which came with ham, pineapple and bacon. We also ordered the Vegan Cheeseburger Pizza, yes vegan. The pizza was unique, as it was topped with a Veganaise (mayonnaise) base, pickles, onion, seasoned tofu, ketchup and mustard. You are probably thinking that this sounds gross, but honestly it was quite good. I am not a fan of tofu, so I picked it off and enjoyed the warm soft dough and hamburger toppings. Brick Road Pizza offers five different vegan pizza choices, as well as the “Build it yourself” vegan choice. This restaurant also has thin crust and whole wheat crust. They have 7-inch to 16-inch pizzas, as well as salads, sandwiches, pasta, a kids menu and a few desserts.

A beautifully drawn musician mural is painted on the wall and visible by all customers who dine in. The mural was the first thing I noticed and the depth and detail of the mural kept me staring. We also found numerous pictures of old musicians such as Chet Baker and Milles Davis. Someone even painted stunning pictures on some of the tables. It seemed as though the building had been somewhat remolded and it carried a contemporary yet old style welcoming atmosphere. The seat cushions on the booth we sat in were very colorful and very spongy. We noticed that old wooden doors separated the booths, creating a very private ambiance. If you are a person who avoids going to certain restaurants because of the open seating, or if you need to have dinner and a serious conversation, then try Brick Road Pizza.

They have gourmet, traditional and vegan pizzas and their menu can be accessed from their Web site. We did not have a hard time finding Brick Road Pizza, and we even parallel parked in the numerous free parking spots in front of the building.

Even as a vegetarian I could not make up my mind. It is unusual for a vegetarian to have the 15 different sandwich options that the Cherry Deli offers. Tessa had over 40 meat sandwich choices which consisted of: turkey, ham, fish, beef, pastrami and corned beef, and chicken. We also had to choose whether we wanted a whole sandwich or just half. Tessa choose#35 called Charles (Street) and I got the #19 called Atlas (Avenue). We grabbed our chips from a rack, and filled our cups with fountain pop which reminded us of Subway. We sat down at one of the light green square tables and in less than 5 minutes one of the employees lay before us our paper wrapped (like Jimmy Johns) sandwiches.

I noticed a door with numerous pictures of the employees, some were goofy and others had smiles across everyone’s face, giving me the impression that everyone here is one big family. The Cherry Deli seems very family oriented and even has high chairs for the little ones. We noticed that someone was always cleaning, which made us not afraid to pop a squat on the wood furniture, especially because of the typical winter cold that is infectious. One of the employees of the Cherry Deli looked at us and said “take care of each other” which seemed to fit Tessa and I quite well. I have known Tessa since fifth grade and after two years of not staying in touch, we finally were reconnected and catching up on life because Tessa transferred this semester to Cornerstone. So I smiled at Tessa and she smiled back like two friends who know each other’s past and will always know of each other’s future. So I want to encourage you to Get Out!, take an old friend and enjoy this welcoming deli shop where everyone is family.

Mondays have always been the one day of the week that I dread. Mondays represent the day in which I have to get back into the swing of going to class. However, this Monday was different. The weather was about 43 degrees outside and the weather ball was blinking red, which means warmer weather ahead. Alyson and I found ourselves stuck in a Monday with our typical groggy, cold weather feelings, so we headed to a small restaurant that’s exploding with color. Orange and purple paint created the outer appearance on the Brandywine Restaurant in Eastown. We drove to an American cuisine restaurant ironically named Brandywine, where you cannot actually purchase wine.

After walking into this small oddly colored building we were greeted by a sign that read: “College students discount, all GVSU, GRCC, and Aquinas students with ID get a discount.” So we thought there might be hope for low-cost dining. This restaurant is small and only has 10 booths and seven tables. We parked behind the building in one of the roughly eight parking spots. Brandywine is not your typical old-time restaurant. It may seem like that from the food, seating and basic atmosphere, but the art is exquisite. We seated ourselves in a booth and marveled at the artwork which surrounded us. A lively mural wrapped along the wall and oodles of pictures containing smiley customers and employees hung from another wall. We were greeted by a friendly waitress who handed us the classic plastic, glossy menus.

After looking at the breakfast menu which is served at all hours, I ordered the parmesan cusabi wrap which came with chips and a pickle, and Alyson ordered the southwestern Quesada. Our hot food came fast on big white plates. Not only does Brandywine have breakfast, wraps, and Quesadas, they also have burritos, chicken, salads and sandwiches. Our food was so beautifully presented that we felt like we were two food critics and the cooks were trying to impress us. My wrap was precisely cut in half and strategically placed on the clean white plate, leaving plenty of room for the chips and dill pickle. Alyson’s Quesada was made so that none of the cheese or meat on the inside was hanging out the sides, with lettuce placed in the center, and sour crème and salsa in little cups on the outside. It was so beautiful that we couldn’t wait to dig in.

This restaurant has a very casual ambiance and could be the very place you stop to get a bottomless cup of coffee. They are family oriented with booster seats and play music for everyone’s preference. The lighting comes from stained glass lamp shades, casting colored rays of light throughout the room. There is also another Brandy Wine on the Beltline near 3 Mile Road only six minutes away. The Brandywine on Lake Drive is actually seven minutes away.

Alyson and I talked, ate and even played the game MASH (which stands for: Mansion, Apartment, Shack, or House) – the game you probably played in middle school. To refresh your memory, MASH is a game that determines your future: residency, spouse, number of kids, vehicle, pet or anything you choose. When we finally determined our future and were completely stuffed, we packed up our leftovers and headed to the register to pay. Our total came to $17. Sadly, we did not get a discount, but maybe that’s because they aren’t use to seeing Cornerstone students. So Get Out and show your face at Brandywine, and maybe your future will look less expensive than ours.

Have you ever seen the movie “Lady and the Tramp”? Remember the dinner scene where the dogs unknowingly slurp the same spaghetti noodle and abruptly find their mouths meeting in a kiss? Well, I am giving you a perfect place to reenact the scene, right in Grand Rapids.

In a big building across from the Van Andel Arena one will find a restaurant where “Chilly Dilly’s” are famous. To what am I referring? Ritz Koney Bar and Grille. They are famous for their “chilly” dill pickles.

Why did I compare this restaurant to the “Lady and the Tramp” when they do not even serve spaghetti? Well, you can sit at a table by the window, like the Disney movie, with a red checkered table cloth, dark lighting, overlooking the city of Grand Rapids. However, alternative rock will be playing as your background music instead of a sappy instrumental love song.

When you walk in through the double doors of this classy bar and grille you will see table seating for anyone’s preference. They have table booths, regular rectangle tables and high tables. This old building has wood floors, red ceiling tile, red seats, free Wi-Fi and plugs for your computer power cords. The bar is on your right and you have to walk all the way in to a counter that looks similar to Noodles and Company. Menu displays hang from the ceiling and order your food and pay for it right away. You can sit down or hang by the counter and wait for your food. Ritz Koney has food specials every day. On Wednesdays they have 50-cent boneless wings, similar to Buffalo Wild Wings.

The walls at Ritz Koney hold many authentic drawings and pictures of Ada Drive and the Ada covered bridge, which can be purchased from local artists. You can also play darts with the electronic dart boards that automatically keeps score. You will also find over six televisions showing: sports, news and “Everybody Loves Raymond.” At the bar they have banners and a big “S” for Michigan State fans, like myself! Bethany Busch and I also found numerous pictures of happy customers with the Chilly Dilly mascot. They also have “Touch Tunes”, an electronic juke box and a lotto machine for those who feel “lucky.”

Bethany ordered fries and the “soup of the day,” which was vegetable beef. I ordered an olive burger which came with fries and a “chilly dilly” pickle, however they ran out of pickles, so I was not able to try one. I heard that they do something to the pickle that makes them taste even better than Vlasic pickles. My burger came with a huge piece of lettuce and a huge beef patty…triple the size of McDonalds! Both of our dinners came in red baskets and we filled our cups from a fountain pop machine. Surprisingly the fries were only $1.70 and nothing on the menu was over $10.

This affordable, contemporary restaurant is perfect for studying or hanging out with friends and watching the big game. I personally plan on going there again. Ritz Koney is only nine minutes from Cornerstone and gets my highest rating 5 out of 5!!!!! So GetOut! and bring a friend.

Lately it seems hard to get my friends together. Now that we are more than halfway through the semester everyone has big projects and papers due. So my Leadership Journey group from last year finally decided to get together. Matt Haller suggested that we get pizza from Arena’s Pizza. So, Kimberly Bytwerk looked up the phone number on Google and I called and ordered the pizza.

When I called a girl picked up the phone, I asked her if they had a 24-inch pizza she said ‘No,’ however the menu online says they do. So I placed the order for an 18-inch pizza, and we had to call back and give them our name, ask how much the pizza would cost, see how long it would be before we came and picked it up because she forgot to tell us. Oh well, we left about 15 minuets after we called.

Trying to get an 18-inch pizza that would satisfy everyone is difficult, so we got it with half pepperoni and the other half bacon, ham and pineapple. Surprisingly our total was only $16.19.

Melissa Shepard, Matt Haller, Abby Stoner and I jumped in the car and headed in the wrong direction. I did not read the directions right and went on 96 instead of 131. Thankfully Matt has a good sensory compass and got us headed in the right direction. You would think that after living in Grand Rapids my whole life, I would know where I was going, but honestly the only thing I know is that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so on cloudy days (like that day), I’m lost.

We ended up in the more run-down, and densely populated side of Grand Rapids, on Leonard Street right by 131. We actually ended up taking 131 to get to the Leonard Street instead of driving through all the lights on Leonard. We searched for a sign that would read Arena’s Pizza, however we never found it. So we went by the address and realized that we passed the pizza shop and turned around in Greenwood cemetery. We ended up at the Leonard Street Pizza, confused at the name and wondered why Google told us that this was Arena’s pizza. So we double checked the address and the phone number with the sign on the building and found we were at the right place. Maybe they just changed names?

When we walked in the door we all were surprised at the sound of a cow bell, and I couldn’t help but laugh. This pizza shop was basically just one big room, and they had a cow bell on the door to let them know when people walked in. Random to have something hick in the “ghetto!” We went to the counter and a man with a strong country accent took my money and gave us our pizza, which explains the cowbell. Our 18-inch pizza looked good and smelled good as we drove back to Cornerstone. It made the car smell wonderful and put us in good moods, so we cranked up the music and sang at the top of our lungs. I will admit, I love singing in the car.

I went to sink my teeth into a little bit of Leonard Street Heaven and was consumed with the taste of warm, juicy pineapple pizza. Matt, Melissa, Abby and Kim all liked it as well. We actually ate the whole pizza, as well as chips and apple cider that I bought from Meijer.

Now I am trying to investigate this mystery. Google calls the Pizza shop (at 1358 Leonard Street) Arena’s Pizza and says they have 24-inch party pizza’s, yet when we went they did not have 24-inch pizzas and it was called Leonard Street Pizza. It also says that an 18-inch pizza with four toppings is 16.25, yet we paid 16.19. This mystery will remain unsolved until you go to the Leonard Street Pizza and ask them yourself. So GetOut! and try this authentic Grand Rapids pizza yourself.

Katrina and I parallel parked on Monroe Center downtown and headed to XO Asian Cuisine. When you first walk into XO you are greeted by two sets of wooden double doors, finally arriving at a cashier’s desk which is connected to a bar. A hostess lit the candle after we sat down at our table and we noticed the faint Asian instrumental music that played in the background. Around the windows we saw beautiful silky, handmade gold linens, which the owner bought and brought over from China. Katrina was surprised at how there were not very many Asian art pieces on the walls or shelves and that we were not given chopsticks to eat with. The lighting was very soft which made it difficult to read the menu, however it did create a romantic atmosphere. On the walls we noticed that there were advertisements for Thailand. The posters looked like they were technically advertising a beautiful resort in some faraway land and “Thailand” was the only word on the poster.

Each place setting at our booth was double plated, the top plate for appetizers. Katrina and I didn’t get appetizers, so our waitress took the top plate. Katrina and I were actually confused when it came to our waitress. We had someone seat us, another person came and gave us our waters, and another person filled our waters when they were empty! Eventually our actual waitress came and took our order. Our authentic Asian food came hot and fast!

The XO Asian Cuisine is very popular amongst the Caucasian eye as many middle class white people say this restaurant is their favorite and that was obvious. Arriving at 5:30 was a good idea as every seat in the restaurant quickly became occupied. Katrina and I found out that XO Asian Cuisine has only been in the Monroe Center for three years, and the owners travel back to China every year to visit family and friends.

The XO Asian Cuisine had a very unique way of displaying their alcoholic beverages. It would seem that book shelves were placed against the wall but they used them to store the wine and beer. How creative! You can also sit at the bar and watch Channel 8 on the flat screen television.

Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisines fill the menu with authentic Asian food. Katrina ordered the chicken fried rice and I ordered the sweet and sour pork which also came with a bowl of rice. Our food came hot on thick light blue square plates. We also had large silverware and the servings were large as well. Our servings were large and it was so good that we left with two “leftover” boxes and extremely full stomachs.

XO Asian Cuisine makes for a nice, relaxing night out of town. It’s very quiet, with a pleasant, even romantic atmosphere that is appropriate for a nice date, or even just friends. So GetOut! And try this food from another country.

Spanish music and red checkered table cloths. Does this look and sound familiar? Probably not for those of us who don’t have a Mexican or Italian heritage. This restaurant also called a café and even played “I will Survive” in Spanish! I heard that song downtown Grand Rapids in a café that’s considered Italian and Cuban fare.

In the United States we typically find Café’s consisting of coffee drinks as part of the menu. Big O’s Café does not have any coffee drinks. It’s not your typical American café. When you first walk into Big O’s you are welcomed by an Altoid Gum machine, where for one quarter you get two pieces of gum. Honestly the machine looked like the typical metal container that Altoids come in. It was sweet!

At Big O’s you can get anything ranging from subs, soup, and salads all for under $10. They also have 12-inch and 16-inch pizza’s ranging from $11-20. They have 22 different specialty pizzas ranging from your regular cheese, supreme and Hawaiian. You can even watch them make the pizzas. Melissa and I watched them stretch and throw the dough, which they never dropped and it never hit the ceiling. As well as pizzas they have 19 different kinds of subs. I got the vegetarian sub which had pizza sauce, anchovies, mushrooms, onions and other things on it. Melissa got the chicken pesto sub, and they both came with chips and a pickle.

This café has free wi-fi which is perfect for studying and the cool lightening creates a relaxed atmosphere. Big O’ Café is half underground which makes the restaurant different. You walk down a ramp to get into the café. When you walk in you see red walls and brick walls. It is very contemporary with many interesting and artistic paintings on the wall. Some of the paintings were definitely out of the ordinary. There was a picture of a “skanky” Mexican woman and another picture of a criminal. Don’t let these pictures stop you from going to this restaurant, the food was pretty good.

The atmosphere is actually very welcoming and you seat yourself. A waitress takes care of your order and gives you your food, so it’s classier than your fast food restaurant. This restaurant is basically one big room, and you can look into the kitchen and see them cook your food and wash your dishes. Fox News can be watched on a flat screen T.V. above the bar. The ceiling is open which exposes the piping and wood, making the room seem bigger and contemporary. The slogan for Big O’s which can be found on the old style leather menus is: “O’ Dine in, and O’ Delivery”.

This café is located right in the middle of Grand Rapids and can be your downtown hot spot. Check out this half underground relaxing shop.

Rebecca Reese, a junior, and I found an old yet contemporary building that mixes coffee, wood-fired pizzas, crepes, panini and smoothies. What a combination. We were immediately surprised as to everything the remodeled Creston library had to offer.

We headed to Plainfield Ave in search of good smoothies, recommended to me by David Murdoch himself. We found this old building on the outside, but when we walked inside it was completely different. The Creston library was remodeled and now is the Red Ball Jet Café. We had to park behind a different building because the parking around the Red Ball Jet was parking meters. When we finally opened the double doors to the Red Ball Jet we were immersed in the smell of hot baking pizza. It made our stomachs growl, especially Rebecca’s because she had just gotten out of soccer practice and we were starving.

We found a high table with two chairs and made ourselves comfortable. The menus were on the table and we opened them up to find our indecisive minds…well, unable to decide. The menu had basically everything ranging from wood-fired pizzas, salads, soup, sandwiches, breakfast/lunch panini, pasta, and crepes (sweet and savory).

We finally decided to get pizzas. They came on these cool, tall, silver pizza stands, which took up the whole table. I got the Hawaiian which had red sauce, grated aged cheese, ham, pineapple, peppers, cilantro and smoked provolone. Rebecca got the sausage and goat cheese, which was definitely interesting and requires those who are lucky enough to have an acquired taste for goat cheese. I, however, do not have a desire for goat cheese, but I gave it a try. Rebecca and I didn’t realize how large the pizzas were going to be and could have split one. Each pizza was about $10 and included eight slices.

By the time we got out of the car and were stuffing pizza down to our bellies, only 20 minutes had passed. They seemed very fast. We even got to watch them cook and prepare our food. When Rebecca and I were full, our waitress came and boxed up our extras. How hospitable, as Murdoch would say.

After looking around the Red Ball Jet Café we noticed that they are Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer supporters, and one can donate money and have your name written on a pink ribbon. We also noticed that they have the Red Ball motif everywhere. Red balls were on the paintings and art, on the lights, and even on the floor. The black board with chalk writing for the espressos, smoothies, bakes goods and omelets, gave this place the true café feeling. They also had two televisions with ESPN on, so you can watch football or baseball. There were signs posted saying “Fair trade organic vitality, 99 cents” and you can buy their coffee in bags.

The slogan for the Red Ball Jet Café is “run a little faster, jump a little higher.” This restaurant is part of the Gilmore Collection which consists of restaurants primarily located in West Michigan that feature a wide variety of cuisine, wine and entertainment. So check out Red Ball Jet’s sister restaurants, mostly located in the B.O.B.

This upscale, classy café that is perfect for relaxing gets my highest rating. Five out of Five. Oh and one more thing…they deliver!

Shopping carts were scarce as we pulled into a parking lot with approximately 15 parking spaces in the front of a “dollar store” looking building. We raced in my 1990 Honda Accord to get a spot, but all were full. We were forced to park in the additional parking, behind the building. Bummer. Thankfully it wasn’t raining.

We went to (basically) the corner of Alpine Ave. and Lamoreaux Dr. looking for Meijer, but not just any old Meijer. We went to the Meijer Thrifty Outlet. Weird name, and weird products. Instead of the typical red Meijer sign with the I and J dotted in blue, we found a red sign that read “Thrifty Outlet.” Although the Meijer logo is found on the trash cans, the checkout lanes and the receipt, one would not really know that everything in the store comes from Meijer branches such as the one on Knapp’s Corner or the one on 28th St.

Instead of the regular Meijer, everything was on clearance, and there was no food. This store contains all of the items that wouldn’t sell at Meijer. So basically they put the “reject” items in this tiny little store and marked the price…way down!

You can purchase a 24-inch television with a DVD player for about $80. You can also get three car air fresheners for 25 cents! The items at this store are not consistent, so you can’t go expecting to find everything you might be looking for. When we went, they had toys and games for 25 percent off the marked price!

This Meijer did not have the typical Meijer appearance. It’s a tiny, completely stuffed and unorganized, clearance store that is free from self-checkouts. Weird. However we did find the conveyer belt cashier checkouts that were once used in the regular Meijer. It only took us about an hour to get through the whole store, but in each isle there were boxes full of items instead of hanging from the merchandise hooks.

Rob Young and Nick Cramer loved the once in a lifetime opportunity that this outlet store gave them. The opportunity to buy 125 square feet of fun for 12 dollars. What fun? Bubble Wrap. So if you need to play a good prank or need to mail something important or fragile, head to the Meijer Thrifty Outlet.

The unfortunate thing about this Meijer is the hours. It’s only open from nine to nine Monday through Saturday and on Sunday it is only open from noon to five. It’s not as convenient as the regular 24 hour Meijer, but the prices are convenient.

This Meijer Thrifty Outlet is very surprising, and could be your shopping center for many birthday, Christmas, and Valentines Day gifts for relatives, friends, and acquaintances…for a cheap price! This small, clearance store gets my highest rating!!!!! (5 out of 5)

Michigan paraphernalia hung from every corner of this little restaurant. It made this State fan not want to mention anything relating to anything green and white or dare to say Sparty. However, when looking closely, one will find green and white napkins, green seats and white walls, so really State colors are hidden in this U of M fan restaurant. So where might one find such a place? A place where true Michigan fans can go to celebrate their Wolverines? 5.37 miles from Cornerstone on the corner of Plainfield and Fuller is where you will find The Breakfast Nook. Not only does this restaurant have blue and yellow everywhere, it also has good food!

At The Breakfast Nook one can get breakfast for every meal of the day, but they don’t just have breakfast they also have lunch and dinner. So what did I order for dinner? Well for the indecisive person like myself, The Breakfast Nook put a little chef’s hat on the menu that denotes customer favorites. So I ordered the Ham Slam that came with special sauce and fries (our waitress told me it was really good) and my sister got the New Yorker wrap with fries. After only waiting what seemed like two minutes, our food came, and it was steaming hot! It smelled good, and our growling stomachs couldn’t wait to dig in! My sister let me try a bite of her wrap and I let her try some of my ham sandwich. Only one word came to my mind after I tried her wrap: wow! The wrap was stuffed with lettuce, mayo, tomatoes and bacon. We both had to get to-go-boxes, because they gave us so much food. My sister was personally excited about the leftover food for lunch the next day.

Although we were the youngest people in the restaurant, and the seat cushion had a big rip in it, the food was good. The Breakfast Nook is not your regular restaurant. One will find beautiful wood carvings of a horse, dove, child, etc. on the wall that were made by a local man and can be purchased for about $140. You can also buy a newspaper and a gumball on your way into the restaurant. If you sit in a certain seat, you can watch the cooks grill your food!

For just under three dollars, one can get two eggs, potato and toast from 6 am to 11 am. You can even get your eggs any way you like them: sunny-side up, poached, over-easy, over-hard, scrambled and omelets. Not only does this restaurant have breakfast, they also have lunch and dinner with consists of Swiss steak, beef tips and noodles, goulash, a mini burrito, perch and a sirloin steak dinner. We didn’t find anything on the menu that was more than $10. Also kids eat free, when an adult meal is purchased. This family friendly restaurant has home cooked meals fresh from the grill.

Looks can definitely be deceiving when it comes to the appearance of this little restaurant, but the people were friendly and the food was great! This local family-owned restaurant is where you can party with people who have more years under their belt, and where you can get a nice home cooked meal. So GetOut! and try The Breakfast Nook.

Want some place where you can check out free books, movies and CDs? Looking for a quiet, air-conditioned building that smells like new books? Need a new spot to study and work on the Internet?

Check out the local library. Kent District Libraries have more resources than Miller Library. One library card gives you access to 18 libraries that have come together to form the Kent District Library.

Ten convenient locations to Cornerstone are in Cascade, Caledonia, East Grand Rapids, Walker, Alto, Grand Rapids Main (Downtown), Yankee Clipper (Leonard), Kentwood, Grandville and Wyoming.

After becoming aware of our resources, Jocelyn and I headed
to the Cascade branch in search of free Internet and a good book to read. We were surprised at how much more we ended up
finding. So we walked through the front doors and into the strong smell of new books. Wow. It was wonderful. I wanted to stand there longer to enjoy the smell, but Jocelyn dragged me to the information desk. When I got my first library card, I was about 6 years old, and I spelled
my name wrong on the card! So, this time I got a (free) new library card with an elephant on it, and we headed to some comfortable chairs for free Internet.

After finding great movies and CDs, I decided to check the catalog online at kdl.org for some of my textbooks. I ended up finding two books that I needed for my world literature class. Amazing! One book was at the Grandville library and another was at the Kentwood library. So I placed a hold on those two books.

I also was able to find magazines, books on tape and books from every genre imaginable. You can even checkout the Bible in every version. Jocelyn and I headed to the
children’s book section and found some rather large bean
bags, which would be great for sleeping on. We then found a room full of games that you would find at the doctor’s office such as a 3-D maze and a large puzzle. We also found a computer with games such as Dora the Explorer and Thomas the Train.

After acting like a kid again, we went to check out our books. Instead of giving the books we were going to checkout to a person at the front desk, we went up to a computer and scanned the books ourselves. The computer even gave us a receipt, which reminded us that our
books are due Sept. 20. It was surprising, fast and convenient, like the self checkout at Meijer.

When we finally walked out of the Cascade library, we found a little garden and a bench, which would be perfect for reading on a nice sunny day. So instead of just finding free Internet and a good book to read, we ended up with two DVDs, two books for my class and an elephant library card.

Honestly, you need to check out the Kent District Libraries. You never know what you might end up with!

In 1920 the world’s largest furniture factory was on Monroe Ave. and was called Berkey and Gay. This furniture business fizzled out and the building is now Boardwalk Condominiums. This building has always been famous for something, and today it has the most amenities in one condo project in the state of Michigan. This condominium is the home of J.D. Reardon’s, a restaurant and bar.

Sarah, Monika, Tommy and I headed downtown for some excellent dining, on Valentine’s Day. We didn’t make reservations to J.D. Reardon’s ahead of time, but surprisingly they had quite a few tables available. We seated ourselves in a richly dark wooden booth. After awhile our waiter came and got us some drinks and took our order.

We struggled for some time deciding what to order. This small restaurant and bar has quite the choices. They have appetizers, 12-inch Bistro Pizzas, soups, salads, chicken and Philly steak sandwiches, entrees, desserts and on Saturdays they have fifty cent hot dogs, so therefore our stomachs and minds could not decide. We ended up ordering two 12-inch bistro pizzas. One was called Mufalatta, which was loaded with toppings, and another pizza labeled “Think you can do better” and we chose to get one side plain cheese and the other side with pepperoni and sausage.

Our pizzas came relatively fast on tall pizza stands and were golden brown and steamy. When we took our first bite into these hot pizzas, the cheese was nice and stringy. The pepperoni was surprisingly spicy, and the Mufalatta was loaded with toppings such as olives, tomatoes, onions and five cheeses. Two 12-inch pizzas for four people were just enough. We looked at the dessert menu and debated getting the Sunday dessert which feeds two, but decided to stay slim.

You can do more than just eat dinner and drink at this restaurant and bar. They have a pool table, arcade golf game, a dart board, lotto tickets, seven televisions, a juke box, a countdown to St. Patrick’s Day and in the summer they have nice outdoor seating.

This restaurant has a very open atmosphere, which creates a place for the college age and up to shoot pool and have a drink with the gang. From Cornerstone it takes about eight minutes to get to J.D. Reardon’s and is quite easy to find. This restaurant is right across the street and overlooks the Grand River, which could provide a nice “after dinner” walk by the water.

This restaurant bar is a comfortable place for many adults to hang out.
